Overview
The Certified Fire Prevention Specialist (CFPS) credential was established in 1971 to recognize qualified individuals dedicated to minimizing fire loss—both physical and financial. This certification serves as a global benchmark and provides a long-term career advantage, certifying competence and granting professional recognition to those who work tirelessly to reduce fire-related losses.
The CFPS credential is awarded to individuals who demonstrate a high level of professionalism through applied work experiences, relevant educational opportunities, and successful completion of a comprehensive certification examination. It is important to note that while some domains align in title and content with sections of the Fire Protection Handbook (FPH), not all domains correspond directly to FPH sections. For instance, content area V: Fire Prevention does not have a corresponding section within the FPH and is derived from multiple sections instead.
The method of certifying the Certified Fire Prevention Specialist (CFPS) requires candidates to demonstrate proficiency in key areas such as fire prevention principles, fire protection systems, fire safety regulations, and risk assessment techniques. The certification process involves an online examination covering various fire prevention topics, which must be completed in 8 hours.
To pass the exam, candidates must achieve a minimum score of 75%. The examination is offered with a maximum of two attempts. Successful completion of the exam, combined with relevant work experience and educational qualifications, ensures the candidate’s expertise in fire prevention and qualifies them for the CFPS credential.
